May… Goals?

April is done, and it’s time to see how I did on my goals:

  • Continue “Merf to 5k”
  • Focus (i.e., stop multitasking, focus on one thing at a time)
  • Continue trying the recipes on my Recipes page
  • Exercise my butt off (well, my thighs, actually)
  • Treat myself like I treat my kids
  • Do one productive thing per day (Project Home)

To tell you the truth, I completely forgot about these goals until I realized it was May! What’s the point of setting goals if you never go back and look at them? And you know what they say… If you don’t know where you are going, you will probably end up somewhere else. With that said, how did I do?

Continue “Merf to 5k”: (F-) To be honest, I’m just having a really tough time with this. I can’t run in the mornings because I have to get the kids ready for school (and I don’t think it would be safe to run outside alone earlier than that). It’s getting too hot here during the day. Going to the gym during the day takes over an hour, and I am not comfortable leaving my office for that long during the day. But I think that’s what I’m going to have to do, at least once a week.

Focus (i.e., stop multitasking, focus on one thing at a time): (F-) This one is huge for me, both personally and professionally. My CEO likes to say that multitasking is doing more than one thing and not doing any of them very well. It’s true, folks. And I’m still doing it, constantly. At work, I need to concentrate on one thing at a time. I really need to give 100% attention to email, projects, and meetings… At home, I want to focus 100% of my attention on my children, my marriage, blogging…

Continue trying the recipes on my Recipes page: (C) I have tried a few new recipes, but not as many as I’d like.

Exercise my butt off (well, my thighs, actually): (B) I’ve been doing pretty well with exercise, but I’d like to get to the point where I’m exercising 5-6 times a week.

Treat myself like I treat my kids: (A-) Not bad! Still staying up too late, though.

Do one productive thing per day (Project Home): (F-) The idea here is that I’ll do one thing per day to move my life in a forward direction. Laundry and dishes don’t count. This is about reorganization, decluttering, etc.

So now here we are. It is May. Time to throw April’s goals out the window and start anew! I loved Lindsay’s post about how she doesn’t make goals. And you know what, I’m going to embrace that idea. I have enough goals at work. At home, I just want to live my life to the fullest.  These “goals” that I set have nothing to do with forward progress and deadlines. So, readers, what is a good word for a non-goal? Endeavor? Intention? Challenge? Plan?

    I read Lindsay’s post, too. I think it’s interesting, especially since it seems like so many bloggers are caught up about goal list. I think in the end, you just need to be flexible with your goals…sometimes they just need to change as time passes.

    At least you’ve been treating yourself well…the most important part! 🙂

  5. I say this with love: if you want to get the A- in treating yourself like you treat your kids, then rethink the F-. What’s LESS than a fail, after all?!? Would you tell your kids they did worse than failing, or would you ask, “well, did you what you could?” 😀

    WHAT ABOUT A FOR EFFORT? I hereby award you one, for trying to achieve MANY goals at once.

      • Carrie Fisher in *When Harry Met Sally*, having lunch with Sally and the dark haired woman talking about her destructive tendency to date married men? Or does Harry say it? 🙂 I know the film, I’m having trouble locking on whose voice is saying it in my brain… and that makes me sad! 😉

  7. I don’t do goals either. I’ve realized it sets me under pressure and rather inhibits me. But I do a little something every day with the things that are important to me – a little piano playing, a little moving my body, a little work on my thesis, a little blogging (posting or commenting) – just focusing on the process rather than on a desired end-state. This way, I worry less, and if you’re consistent, you reach the desired end state anyway sooner or later.

    I call these things my little projects I have going on. 🙂

    I really like that goal of treating yourself well and great job on doing well on your other goals.

    I think you should concentrate on running one day during the week and mostly during the weekend and build it up from there. Don’t stress yourself.

  11. Love the “non-goals”. Personally, I stress myself out when I make strict goals for myself. I do much better when I aspire to do better – so maybe you call them your “aspirations”. Good luck achieving your non-goals. Perhaps we can be “non-goal achievers” together. 🙂

  12. great list!! how do you feel going for a run when the kiddos go to bed? now that the days are longer I am able to do that since its getting too hot during the day to run during my lunch break. I too don’t feel comfortable going when its completely dark.

      I’m not comfortable going out for a run at 8:30. 😦 You know what, though. I could actually go on the days my boys are out of the house by 8:00 AM. Maybe I’ll give that a shot.

  13. I love “non-goals.” Seems less intimidating. 🙂 I’m the worst at focusing on one single thing at home and work. Is it a mom thing? I don’t feel safe running too early or late myself so I do it during the work day. The runs are usually 7 miles or less during the week and I do the baby wipe clean up thing but it works for me. Honestly, if I didn’t workiout during the work day, I’m not sure how I would fit fitness in.

  14. I think overall, you still did well. You realized more about things you want to change. And that, in itself (vs ignoring the issue) is a big deal! Baby steps, right?

  15. I think your non-goals look great!! I don’t really like to think of things as goals either. More like…things to look forward to completing! Haha, such a mouthful!
